Mónica in Oklahoma Mon Amour
Oklahoma Mon Amour portrays a ruptured family and the quest for its reunion, the journey of two brothers, the challenges faced by multicultural youth needing to find their true identity and to unveil buried secrets, all of this tinted by the puzzling closeness between Mexico and the U.S.
Filmed in black and white and with a structure that interweaves fiction and real events evoking poetic and reflective art-house films from the sixties and seventies, the film also references current world tensions, and presents an unusual approach to the Mexico/U.S dynamics, also showing a cosmopolitan Mexico City seldom seen in cinema.
"On the surface, Oklahoma Mon Amour is an unapologetic intellectual film, but what makes it such a joy to watch is its direct line to our hearts and our skins. It transforms the places that it depicts into emotions and sensations."
The film was sponsored by the University of Oklahoma College or Arts and Sciences, the College of International Studies, and the Arts and Humanities Forum. The film has received support from the Film and Media Studies Department at the University of Oklahoma.
FILM TRAILER
Oklahoma is the place that ultimately connects the Gaertners, a family separated by a brutal tragedy. A tragedy that, like an explosion, ripped them apart, leaving each one of them in solitude in the barren flatlands of Oklahoma, the busy streets of Mexico City, and a "brilliantly clean and tidy cage" in London.
While Sebastian's journey might decipher the past and alleviate their settled-in despair, Nico's obsessive inner thoughts keep him –and the viewer– aware of a reality, beyond the fiction, that parallels the space in which this film exists.
